Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder of the intestines that results in abdominal cramping, bloating, diarrhea, and/or constipation.
Not everyone with IBS has all of these symptoms, but it is estimated that about 20% of Americans have IBS in some form. U.S. data show that women are 2 to 3 times more likely than men to be affected by IBS. Some people with IBS may miss school, work, or social activities because of their symptoms. In fact, IBS is the second-leading cause of absenteeism in the workplace.
