Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treatment - Irritable Bowel Syndrome Causes

The cause of IBS is still unknown. People with this disorder are thought to have abnormal contractions of the intestines, although the intestines are otherwise healthy. These abnormal muscle contractions can lead to diarrhea and/or constipation and abdominal pain.

Several factors are thought to contribute to IBS symptoms, including:
Emotional stress
Eating habits
Elevated hormone levels (in women)

Stool leaves intestines too quickly
Not enough fluid is absorbed from the stool

Stool leaves intestines too slowly
Too much fluid is absorbed from the stool

As a first step in controlling IBS, your doctor may look for risk factors such as emotional stress, inadequate fiber intake, consumption of fatty foods, caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, or lactose intolerance (the inability to properly digest dairy products). If changing your lifestyle or diet doesn't eliminate symptoms, your doctor may recommend taking a fiber therapy product such as FiberCon® for relief of constipation.

For people who don't have sufficient relief with fiber therapy, doctors may prescribe different types of drugs that can help treat IBS symptoms.
